The State of the Job Market
2025's developer job market is competitive but not closed. Companies are still hiring — they're just being more selective. The key is standing out with proof of skill rather than just certifications.
Build Real Projects, Not Tutorials
Employers want to see that you can build things. Finish at least 2-3 projects that solve real problems. A todo app won't cut it. Think: a tool you actually use, an API for a niche hobby, or a clone of a product with a twist.
Your Portfolio Is Your Resume
Before you apply anywhere, make sure your portfolio site is clean and your GitHub is active. Recruiters spend about 30 seconds on a portfolio — make the first impression count.
Networking Over Cold Applications
80% of jobs are filled through referrals. Attend meetups, engage on Twitter/X and LinkedIn, contribute to open source, and build genuine relationships. One warm intro is worth 50 cold applications.
The Interview Process
Prepare for: behavioral questions (STAR method), technical screens (algorithms), and take-home projects. Practice on LeetCode but don't over-index on it — most jobs don't require hard algorithm problems.
Be Persistent
Most developers send 50-100+ applications before landing an offer. Track your applications, follow up, and iterate on what's not working. It takes time, but consistent effort compounds.
