What Is Docker?
Docker is a platform for packaging applications into containers — lightweight, portable units that include everything an app needs to run: code, runtime, libraries, and config. "It works on my machine" becomes "it works everywhere."
Installing Docker
Download Docker Desktop from docker.com. It's free for personal use and includes the Docker Engine, CLI, and a GUI for managing containers.
Your First Container
# Pull and run an nginx web server
docker run -d -p 8080:80 --name my-nginx nginx
# See running containers
docker ps
# Stop the container
docker stop my-nginx
Writing a Dockerfile
A Dockerfile describes how to build a custom image for your app:
FROM node:20-alpine
WORKDIR /app
COPY package*.json ./
RUN npm ci
COPY . .
EXPOSE 3000
CMD ["node", "server.js"]
Docker Compose for Multi-Container Apps
Docker Compose lets you define your entire stack in a YAML file — app server, database, cache — and start everything with one command: docker compose up.
Next Steps
Once you're comfortable with Docker basics, explore Docker networking, volumes for data persistence, and eventually Kubernetes for orchestrating containers at scale.
